It is possible to build a successful business with little more than a great idea and passion for your vision. When I started my business 14 years ago, I really had no idea that my concept would grow into the successful business it did and honestly, I was not prepared for success.

I had always been a big dreamer, always was able to visualize the bigger picture. When the idea came to me, I did not take the time to really figure out how I would handle success, I only believed that it was something I needed to do.

That day, I remember thinking that I could take my existing small business and somehow put it on the internet and make it nationwide. I really knew very little about the internet but I knew this was something I wanted to do.

I ventured down to the nearest store with my $80.00, determined that I was going to purchase software to build my web site. I asked the sales clerk what software I would need to build a web site and he handed me Adobe Pagemill.

I remember getting back to my office and loading it onto my computer and starting at the screen thinking, “what have I gotten myself in to?” I started trying to figure out the software which was probably the most frustrating thing I have ever done in my life. Bound and determined that I was going to do this, I did not give up.

Days went by and I worked on nothing else, over tired, pounding headache, I will never forget the feeling when I was finally able to upload my very first site to the internet. It was one of the most exciting things I have ever done, I was so proud of myself.

Feeling that I could conquer anything, I started researching other software to build web sites. There weren’t many out there and after reading everything I could, I made the bold decision to purchase Macromedia Dreamweaver. It didn’t take me long to get the hang of it and soon before I knew it I was building a site every few weeks for what I affectionately referred to as “my little empire.”

I was the first online divorce company and I had very few sales initially. That did not stop me, it did not even slow me down, I researched laws in all 50 states and created all of my own legal documents for each state.

Four months later and 16 sites later, I realized one day that I was successful. I had been so busy working on divorce papers and my sites, I really never took the time to see just how many sales I was doing.

Even today, I am still shocked by the amount of success I had, sales of $30,000 to $50,000 per month with very low overhead, less than $1,000/month. People ask me how I did it and quite honestly, the concept is simple, find a need, fill the need, build and they will come. I had cornered the market early in the game, my sites were grandfathered into the search engines.

Part of my success I contribute to never giving up. I had countless people tell me I was insane, that my idea would never go anywhere, I refused to listen. I believed in myself, I knew I would not quit until I succeeded. Back then I really didn’t know what that benchmark for success would be.

Looking back, I realize that I was not doing it for the money, I was doing it to prove to myself that I could. I never focused on the money, it was always about being the best at what I did and staying one step ahead of the game as things began to change with the internet.

I had copy cats, people who tried to do what I was doing and that only gave me more motivation to be better. All of those copy cats quickly failed, my business was not one that could be copied very easily.

Within a few years I realized what I had done wrong. When I started my company, I did it alone. I did everything myself and I continued to do everything myself which ironically ended up hurting me later. I did not expect the level of success I reached and I was not prepared for the day I realized how burned out I was.

I attempted to sell my company and quickly learned I couldn’t. What made my company impossible to sell was the fact that I was the resource which made the company successful. I had all of the knowledge, experience, and skills that were needed to run the business effectively. This was a harsh lesson, here I was sitting on a very successful business that I could not sell unless I was willing to go with the new owner. Why would I do that? Why would I sell the business to keep doing exactly what I was doing for less money?

I will not get into the secrets on how I did it because those are now considered my “trade secrets.” I will say this, I started my business before the pay per click, before Google, and before there was much internet marketing. I am very proud to say that I never, not once, paid a dime for advertising.

I have helped several other people take their business online and showed them how to do it without making a huge investment. All of those I have helped have sites sitting in the top 5 of Google and Yahoo without paying to be indexed.

It does require a lot of hard work and definite passion for what you do but it can be done. To this day I find it amusing, all of the SEO stuff, Google, etc and I always smile when I read different articles on the subject of growing an online business. What I learned was far more simple and to this day, I have refused to buy in to all of that stuff.

I have gone on to other things now and I always use the same approach and it has never proved to be wrong. I tell those who ask me to invest in themselves, working long hours day after day does take a toll and keeping yourself healthy and focused is important. Learn everything you can, even if you hire someone to do the work for you because knowledge will never be taken away.

For an insurance sales person, it is essential to make the best use of your time. Some experts say that organization is the only way to insurance sales success. Other professionals say that unless you can prioritize what is most important at a particular time, you will never succeed. Neither side is correct.

Did you ever go in for a lawyer consultation, and see the lawyer’s desk clear of all clutter and files? What did you think?  Is this a lawyer than is super organized and professional, or is it so neat that he is starving for business? Another lawyer has stacks and stacks of files and manuals that appear to look like an avalanche certain to occur. Can you determine which lawyer is going to do the best job for you? No.

Early in your sales career you are instructed how you should organize your day (even though the information provided is incorrect). You are instructed to have a file or list prepared beforehand of 50 to 100 people you are going to call You will start your telephone phone calling at a certain time and end it on schedule. A daily file, organized by date and last name contains possible prospects. Likewise, there is a file for sales clients, neatly in alphabetical order. The briefcase and presentation book are all picture perfect ready to make that next sales.

There is a 94% failure rate for annuity, health and life insurance agents. A lot can be contributed to organizing a nonproductive day. This pattern is continued with little change.

As an insurance sales agent, have you ever sat down and made a priority list? A priority list would consist in order the items that would help advance your career the quickest. When I was an insurance sales agent, I admit I was never 100% organized. I did not follow a strict schedule and my desk was always a mess. (it still is). I had very determined goals to reach, and quickly learned what worked the most effectively. Along with this, I discovered tasks that were truly a waste of time. Distractions and time wasting roadblocks that returned little income for the time spent. When I became smart enough to become my own guide, instead of a sheep, I prioritized. However, my method was different from most insurance representatives.

I never made a daily to do list, as many sales managers and coaches instructed. That is because my daily list could change in the middle of the day. I wanted to flexible enough to make sales opportunities appear as often as possible. There could be six appointments in just one day. The next day might be tied up with paperwork and calls, and zero appointments. I carried my prospects leads with me, and after making a sale, I was on fire, all pumped up. The result would be to take a prospect lead with no appointment, and simply go to the door and turn it into one. There was never the stagnation of a routine that had to be maintained in a certain order.

SALES SUCCESS    There is no mold, which can guarantee it. There is no teacher that can teach it. Only you can develop it, and improve on it. A productive insurance sales career always has 3 ingredients all the pros However each of them has their own winning combination, just as you must develop yours. You must develop the right combination of meaningful organization, a correct order of priorities, and the flexibility to change constantly. You need to focus to get the results

When running an online business, the focus is very important part of it. You need to work the focused way in order to finish what you have started and to reach the goals you have set. You just can’t do million things at the same time and still expect to get everything done. You need to focus on what you do.

The same it is with dancing. As soon as your mind starts to wander, you are going to lose your steps. However, when you keep you focus on the dancing, things get much easier.

You can’t do everything by yourself

I must say at first that many people are running their online businesses by themselves. However, in many cases you see entrepreneurs partnering together.

The reason is quite obvious. You are able to grow your business faster with a partner than doing it by yourself. Also, whereas you have your own strengths, your business partner may have strengths of his/her own that will complement your business.

Even though you may be running your business by yourself, there are times when you need some help. Whenever this kind of situation occurs, you have to be willing to ask for a help to move forward. You can do this by asking your business coach or going to forums or blogs in your market, to meet other people, who may have experienced the same issues than you.

Do Entrepreneurs Have To Choose Between Health Or Wealth?


Call me greedy if you like but I want both. We all know the struggles of maintaining the work and exercise balance. If managed correctly the two can feed off of each other. Staying fit has proven to help alleviate those problems. I have not always maintained that balance when the demands of running a business became overwhelming. As a member of the U. S. Army, and entrepreneur running a marketing agency, I learned a lot about discipline and motivation which helps to keep me focused today. As a successful business owner you already have those traits of discipline and motivation. It is a matter of shifting them to other positive habits.

This may seem obvious but it has to be mentioned. Set reasonable goals. What are you trying to accomplish? Knowing your goals will tell you how to proceed. Do you want to meet a mate? OK, then you need weight lifting, cardio, and change of diet and you need to start yesterday. Do we want to relieve stress? OK, you can start walking or running around your schedule. Do you want to relieve stress and have more energy? OK, you start with something fun and easy and add to it as you improve. Knowing where to start will get you where you are going. Other goals to consider will be based on your level of fitness. If you have never worked out or it has been a long time since you worked out my suggestion would be to start slow and easy. When I was in the Army we routinely ran or worked out five times a week. At the time I was easily running seven to eight minute miles. I tell you that to let you in on my mindset when I started running again after a 20 year hiatus. I had set unrealistic goals for myself that almost destroyed my esteem and motivation. I was devastated that I could not even finish two miles without stopping. It seemed, at the time, like a waste of time. It is OK to set those goals small with the intent in raising them later. The feeling of accomplishment in the beginning will fuel you to the next workout.

Now that you have your goals laid out it is time to write them down. Literally. It is time to get out your appointment book and schedule working out. Yes, I understand you are busy and have a company to run. I get it. What is more important than your health? Schedule working out just like it is an important meeting with a new client. Before you know it you will be looking forward to working out. What has worked for me is to sign up for an event. I like obstacle courses but there are plenty out there to choose from. I run three or four a year as well as the occasional 5k for charity. When I know I have something coming up that I have already paid for and planned then that motivates me to get to work. I know what I ran it in last year so I have a time to beat. Who better to compete against than yourself?

There are plenty of other tips or techniques from a myriad of sources but these can help anyone get started. What it comes down to is motivation and dedication. The only person who can make you go to the gym is you. If you show up you are halfway there. Even if you are having a bad day or do not feel well then just show up. A bad day working out is better than not working out. Be safe and show up.

This is going to sound harsh. If you are not making an effort to exercise and take care of yourself then you are being selfish. You are being selfish to your family, friends, employees, and neighbors. All of these people in one way or another rely on you. Are there reasons to be selfish? Do it because you want to look good. Do it because you want to feel better. Do it for yourself. Be selfish and show up.
